Swadlincote Woodlands provides a green lung close to the town centre for the people of Swadlincote.
On Thursday 24th January local resident Mrs Norma Harrison, Charlotte Dooley of The Veolia Environmental Trust and Cllr John Lemmon, Chairman of South Derbyshire’s Housing and Community Services Committee will plant the first of 620 new trees in Swadlincote Woodlands.
The trees will be alongside the new stretch of footpath that links the park’s viewing point to Bernard Street and completes a circular footpath route around the park. The project has been made possible by a grant of £25,000 from The Veolia Environmental Trust under the Landfill Communities Fund.
Says Councillor John Lemmon, “We are very grateful to The Veolia Environmental Trust for the grant which has made this work possible. Swadlincote Woodlands provides a green lung close to the town centre for the people of Swadlincote. Over the last 10 years a former landfill and open cast site has been transformed into 33 hectares of woodland. The park includes open space, woodlands, play areas and a point for viewing across the town and valley. A network of footpaths criss-cross the site and link to existing access points. Without the Trust’s support the additional footpath links would not have been created for people of all abilities and the circular walk around route would not have been completed.”
Charlotte Dooley, Project Manager of The Veolia Environmental Trust says: ‘We are proud to support community and environmental projects across the UK which provide green spaces where people can enjoy the environment. We are glad that we have been able to contribute significantly to improvements at this particular access point to the site. We know that the footpaths in Swadlincote Woodlands and additional landscaping make it easier for people in the town to exercise and be healthier.”
