Residents can apply for a variety of grants to make their homes warmer and to save money.
South Derbyshire is the first council in Derbyshire to enable local residents and businesses to see if they are letting expensive heat escape from their homes.
South Derbyshire District Council’s on-line thermal map is being launched on Wednesday 16 January, 2008 at 12.30 pm at the Collingwood Centre in Swadlincote. Denise Blyde, the District’s Private Sector Housing Manager, will be showing older residents who meet at the centre how much heat their homes are losing.
Says Denise Blyde, “South Derbyshire District Council and Derby City Council employed a specialist company to show heat loss from every building in their areas. Now in South Derbyshire we have put this information on line. By simply logging on to http://www.south-derbys.gov.uk/energy and typing in your postcode you can see if your home is blue or green which shows it isn’t losing too much heat or a very financially and environmentally expensive red.”
Residents can apply for a variety of grants to make their homes warmer and to save money.
Says Cllr John Bladen, “We have expert staff in South Derbyshire who know all the different organisations which will help so that work to reduce heat loss can be carried out for free or cheaply. In some special cases you can even be paid by outside organisations for the work to be carried out in your home. Residents should phone the Civic Offices on 01283 595795 or log onto http://www.south-derbys.gov.uk/energy. Businesses can look at the website to see if they are losing heat and money and then call The Carbon Trust on 0800 0852005 who will carry out a detailed survey for them.
“As we made clear in our Corporate Plan we are committed to protecting the environment now and for the benefit of future generations. We are being very pro-active in encouraging people to cut down on the heat they lose which affects their pockets and our planet.”
